joining the dots on The Peerage – Foxes and Wrights

I’m a big fan of Darryl Lundy’s The Peerage site, not because I’m a snob, but because it’s free and I like the way you can trace ancestors along the various branches. Every so often I send Darryl some updates and also try and join the dots and dead ends on his site that are connected with my ancestors. I recent noticed that he had a Sir Douglas Fox and a Sir Charles Douglas Fox. I think they are the same person. From what I understand from a pedigree I have of the Wright family Lucy Fox was daughter of Mary Wright and Sir Douglas Fox/Sir Charles Douglas Fox. Mary who was daughter of Francis Wright of Osmaston Manor and Selina FitzHerbert.

It was interesting to find out that Sir Charles Douglas Fox‘s brother Sir Francis Fox married Selina Wright who was the sister of Sir Charles Douglas Fox’s wife Mary.

The Peerage site has Mary and Selina Wright as being daughters of Francis Wright of Osmaston Manor. I think that this Francis Wright and Francis Wright are the same person.

I also think that Francis Wright who lived at Osmaston Manor and had a daughter called Elizabeth Wright is also the same person. Elizabeth married John Bridges Plumptre, son of Reverend Henry Western Plumptre. Her brother John mentioned below married Emily Sophia, who was also the daughter of the Reverend Henry Western Plumptre.

Not so sure though about the Francis Wright The Peerage site has listed who had a daughter called Frances who married Edward Blount, son of Sir Walter Blount, 6th Bt. Nor the a Francis Wright from Nottingham who had a daughter called Nancy who married Wilfred Arthur Greene, 1st and last Baron Greene.

I’m pretty certain that the Reverend Henry Wright on The Peerage site is also a son of Francis Wright of Osmaston Manor and Selina FitzHerbert. I’m also pretty certain that the Francis Beresford Wright who married Adeline Francis Henrietta FitzHerbert who thy have listed is also son of Francis Wright of Osmaston Manor and Selina FitzHerbert.

As mentioned above, Francis Wright and Selina Fitzherbert had a son called John who married Emily Sophia, the daughter of Reverend Henry Western Plumptre. John Wright assumed the surname Osmaston in 1876 .

The Peerage site has 3 John Osmastons here, here and here. I think they are all the same person, namely the John Wright son of Francis Wright of Osmaston Manor and Selina FitzHerbert who changed his surname to Ostmaston.

I found the following online source Arthur Charles Fox-Davies. Armorial families : a directory of gentlemen of coat-armour (page 242 of 355):

JOHN OSMASTON, Esquire, J.P. for cos. Derby, Stafford, and Sussex, D.L. co. Derby. Born June 21, 1831, being the eldest son of the late Francis Wright Osmaston, Esq., J.P. for the cos. Notts, Derby, and Staf-ford, D.L. for CO. Derby, and High Sheriff co. Notts 1842, principal owner of the Bulterley Works, by his wife Selina, eldest dau. of Sir Henry FitzHerbert, 3rd Bart., of Tissington Hall.

Married, firstly, June 23, 1853, Emily Sophia, dau. of Rev. Henry Western Plumptre [mentioned above], Rector of Eastwood, Notts ; and by her (who died April 11, i860) had Issue …

He married secondly, Dec. 19, 1861, Florence Mary, dau. of the late Edward Royd Rice of Dane Court, Kent ; and has Issue …

The Lionel Sherbrooke Osmaston listed is the son of John Wright/Osmaston and Florence Mary Rice above and so is his brother Arthur Edward Osmaston.

The Eleanor Agnes Osmaston listed is the daughter of John Wright/Osmaston and Emily Sophia Plumptre.

Other loose ends I found were the Reverend Charles Thomas Plumptre. He married Elizabeth Wright who was the daughter of John Wright and Elizabeth Beresford.

The Ichabod Wright listed is the grandfather of John Wright. The Captain Samuel Wright listed is John Wright‘s brother.

This missing generational link is the banker John Wright of Nottingham, son of Ichabod Wright, (5/4/1723-17/12/1789 ) who married Ann Sherbrooke (dau of John Sherbrooke of Nottingham) on 5th January 1748. John and Anne were parents of John Wright and Captain Samuel Wright, among others.

I’m pretty certain that this Ichabod Wright listed as father of Mary Wright is the same Ichabod Wright as having married Elizabeth Wildbore, daughter of John Wildbore and Mary Milnes.

However, the Ichabod Wright whose daughter Harriet married Samuel Jones Loyd, 1st and last Baron Overstone is the grandson of the Ichabod Wright above (see Stirnet Wright02).

I also think the Ichabod Wright whose daughter Maria Octavia married Arthur Kett Barclay is the same person as the Ichabod Wright whose daughter Harriet is listed as having married Samuel Jones Loyd, 1st and last Baron … and the same person as this Ichabod Wright and Ichabod Charles Wright is his son.

I also think that this Reverend William Bury listed may have been the one who had a daughter called Alice Elizabeth who married Philip of Melington hall (son of Francis Wright and Selina FitzHerbert above).

I not certain about this link, but the Frances Wright who was the daughter of Francis Wright of Osmaston Manor and Selina Fitzherbert, married the Rev. Frederic Edward Wigram in abt. Apr-Jun 1859. There a reference for Fredrick at HighfieldHistory.co.uk, which mentions that his father was Edward and his mother was Catherine. Stirnet mentions a Edward Wigram who married a Catherine Smith, dau of George Smith of Selsdon. The Edward Wigram they mention is the son of Sir Robert Wigram of Walthamstow, 1st Bart and Eleanor Watts listed on The Peerage site here. Not sure if I’ve joined the dots here too.

There’s probably more, but there’s over 600 Wrights on The Peerage and I was only trying to tie-up a few loose ends.

  1. The duplicate links above will stop working once they’ve been edited on The Peerage site. So see this post as Work In Progress.

  2. I like The Peerage website too as it lists all my relatives on Norfolk Island, and their parents, and grandparents and so on. Fascinating. Although today tried to visit it unsuccessfully. Hope its just due to site maintenance.
