A shared descent with my step-mother – revisited

I’d mentioned back in July that I’d found out that my step-mother and her children are listed on The Peerage site. It appears they are also descended from the Maitland Clan (see more here). We both seemed to be descended from Charles Maitland, 6th Earl of Lauderdale, but there was a gap on The Peerage site between Frederick Lewis Maitland-Heriot and a Captain Hon. Frederick Lewis Maitland of Rankeillour who was the son of Charles Maitland, 6th Earl of Lauderdale above. I thought the missing link was possibly James Makgill Maitland-Heriot of Ramornie, but the Stirnet.com site doesn’t show his offspring, so I was hoping Antony Maitland could help me solve the puzzle. Sadly, he didn’t get back to me but I think I have figured this out without his help.

As mentioned above, The Peerage site lists a Frederick Lewis Maitland-Heriot who married Martha Agnew, daughter of Sir Andrew Agnew of Lochnaw, 7th Bt. There’s a Frederick Lewis Maitland-Heriot, Esq.,of Ramurnie, listed in the THE PEERAGE OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE (1856) on Google Books here. It shows that he married on 3 Oct. 1848, Martha, 2nd daughter of the late Sir Andrew Agnew, Bart. So it seems like we have the same person, and he’s listed here as the second son of the following:

James HERIOT, Esq, b. 11 Sept. 1774, d, 26 April 1848; having m. 31 Dec. 1813, Margaret, 2nd daughter of William Dalgleish, Esq., of Scotscraig.

Judging by the dates of birth, death and marriage I think the James HERIOT above is the same person that Stirnet.com lists twice as follows:

[maitland03]: James Makgill Maitland-Heriot of Ramornie (b 11.09.1774, d 26.04.1848) had issue; m. (31.12.1813) Margaret Dalgleish (d 28.01.1869, dau of William Dalgleish of Scotscraig).

[‘Dalgleish01‘] James Maitland Heriot of Ramornie, m. 1813 Margaret Dalgleish dau. of William Dalgleish of Scotscraig (b 1770, d 01.08.1824), m. (11.09.1792) Jane Isabel Ogilvy (d 1812, dau of Archibald Ogilvy of Inchmartine).

James Makgill Maitland-Heriot of Ramornie is listed on Stirnet.com [maitland03] as the second son of Frederick Lewis Maitland of Rankeillour (b 19.06.1730, d 16.12.1786), m. (27.08.1767) Margaret Louisa Dick (dau of James Dick of Colluthie)

This seems to be Captain Hon. Frederick Lewis Maitland of Rankeillour listed on The Peerage site as the son of Charles Maitland, 6th Earl of Lauderdale, who married Margaret Dick, daughter of James Dick.

So another loose end tied up.
