some other genealogical dead-ends: The Peerage

Back in late June I contacted Darryl Lundy over at The Peerage about whether he could help with a query. It was just that I had seen a Lady Jean Stewart as listed as an ancestor on Paul Theroff’s Descendents of Henry VII files. She’d been listed as the daughter of Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney, but the only reference I could find of this was A Genealogical History of the Dormant, Abeyant, Forfeited, and Extinct by Bernard Burke (Published 1866). Darryl got back to me and said it was confirmed in Cokyane’s Complete Peerage (vol VIII, page 2). I also pointed out that this was likely to make the Helen Lesley (?) he had listed as marrying John Drummond, 2nd Lord Maderty, as more likely being Margaret Leslie ( d.1668) the daughter of Patrick
Leslie, Lord Lindores
, d.1608, who was first husband of Lady Jean Stewart. He got back to me and said that this was also contained in Cockayne – volume VIII, page 348.

He’s since updated the site and I can now follow my ancestry along this line as far as Helen Carmichael , the daughter of Hon. William Carmichael and Helen Craig. Helen Carmichael married John Gibson of Durie. He cites the source as being:

Charles Mosley, editor, Burke’s Peerage, Baronetage & Knightage, 107th edition, 3 volumes (Wilmington, Delaware, U.S.A.: Burke’s Peerage (Genealogical Books) Ltd, 2003), volume 1, page 695.

Sir Alexander Maitland is another genealogical dead-end I’ve found on The Peerage site. He’s the son of Charles Maitland, 6th Earl of Lauderdale and Lady Elizabeth Ogilvy. I couldn’t find a source cited though.

Thanks to Rafael Madan (see more here) I can join these two ‘loose-ends on The Peerage site as follows:

Sir Alexander Maitland, 1st Bart (b 21.03.1728, d 14.02.1820); married (27.06.1754) Penelope Madan (d 22.12.1805, dau of Martin Madan)

Their son Sir Alexander Charles Maitland, 2nd Bart (b 21.08.1755, d 07.02.1848); married (30.04.1786) Helen Gibson-Wright (dau of Alexander Gibson-Wright of Clifton Hall and Kersie (d 08.11.1819)

Alexander Gibson-Wright of Clifton Hall and Kersie (d 08.11.1819), m. (29.01.1768) Margaret Gibson, the daughter of John Gibson of Durie and Helen Carmichael as mentioned above and on The Peerage site.

4 generations later my great grandmother Alice Marie (Elsie) Maitland, marries George Henry Kirby. Alice Marie Maitland is daughter of George Keith Maitland (1854-1896) and Theresa McDonnell (1845-1932) of Keppoch (daughter of Angus 22nd Chief)

George Henry Kirby is the son of Alfred Octavius Kirby and Alice Baxendale. She’s the daughter of Lloyd Baxendale and sister of Constance Mary Baxendale who are both listed on The Peerage site. Source cited as follow:

Ashworth P. Burke, editor, Family Records, (1897 reprint: New York, , N.Y., U.S.A.: Heraldic Publishing Company, 1965), page 29. Hereinafter cited as Family Records.

As mentioned before, my stepmother Shirley Ann Gaze (née Powys-Maurice) is also mentioned on The Peerage site (see more here).

I’m pretty certain that we are both descendants of Charles Maitland, 6th Earl of Lauderdale and Lady Elizabeth Ogilvy, although there’s a gap in her pedigree on The Peerage site between the Frederick Lewis Maitland-Heriot and Captain Hon. Frederick Lewis Maitland of Rankeillour. Seems like her entry has been confirmed by an email update. Wonder whether Darryl accepts other email updates?
