A shared descent with my step-mother?

I’ve just found out that my step-mother (she who shall not be named) and her children are listed on The Peerage site. It appears they are also descended from the Maitland Clan, although it’s been difficult to completely establish our common ancestor. I do remember hearing something about this as a teenager, but was unlikely to have been particularly interested or possibly tried to block it out sub-consciously.

I’m guessing we’re both descended from Charles Maitland, 6th Earl of Lauderdale, but the The Peerage site stops with him in one direction and at Frederick Lewis Maitland-Heriot in the other. I think the missing link is possibly James Makgill Maitland-Heriot of Ramornie although Stirnet.com site doesn’t show his offspring. I’m hoping Antony Maitland can help me solve the puzzle as he has quite a lot of information about Captain Frederick Lewis Maitland. It’s a all a bit confusing because there’s another Frederick Lewis Maitland (Rear Admiral) and I think it’s this one that Napoleon surrendered to, which marked the final end of the Napoleonic Wars.

Anyway, I’ve tried to show the connection below. You’ll notice the difference in generations, which may have something to do with her lot being away at sea more than my lot although this never seemed to stop my father.

  1. Hi!
I have just discovered that the Steele family returned from Jamaica in 1933 and gave their address as Dean House, Kilmeston. Robert and Norah Esme Steele were their names and they had a 7 year old son, Thomas. I know they lost a son, James in WW2.
This interests me as I live about 4 miles from there and I was born in Dumbarton and my great-grandfather x 7 was John Dickson of Knightswood. His granddaughter married Rev William Reed of Warkwarth and their daughter married Robert Steele of Greenock shipbuilders and so Robert of Kilmeston, in this direct line- and I share the same great grandfathers a few times removed.

    1. Marion … that’s very interesting. I think Gaze family most have moved there in the 60s, maybe late 50s. I used to visit/stay there in mid-70s. It was an amazing house, but there were a number of big houses in that area and guess that the families probably knew each other well. I think Steele family also married Maitlands, so interesting connections. Justin
